Graph colouring and the total Betti number

چکیده
The total Betti number of the independence complex of a graph is an intriguing graph invariant. Kalai and Meshulam have raised the question on its relation to cycles and the chromatic number of a graph, and a recent conjecture on that theme was proved by Bonamy, Charbit and Thomassé. We show an upper bound on the total Betti number in terms of the number of vertex disjoint cycles in a graph. The main technique is discrete Morse theory and building poset maps. Ramanujan graphs with arbitrary chromatic number and girth log n is a classical construction. We show that any subgraph of them with less than n vertices have smaller total Betti number than some planar graph of the same order, although it is part of a graph with high chromatic number.

An upper bound for total colouring of graphs
McDiarmid C.J.H. and A. Sanchez-Arroyo, An upper bound for total colouring of graphs, Discrete Mathematics 111 (1993) 3899392. We give an upper bound on the number of colours required to extend a given vertex colouring of a graph to a total colouring. This shows that for any simple graph there is a total colouring using at most :d + 3 colours, where A is the maximum vertex degree.
متن کاملList edge-colouring and total colouring in graphs of low treewidth
We prove that the list chromatic index of a graph of maximum degree ∆ and treewidth ≤ √ 2∆ − 3 is ∆; and that the total chromatic number of a graph of maximum degree ∆ and treewidth ≤ ∆/3 + 1 is ∆ + 1. This improves results by Meeks and Scott.
متن کاملEdge-colouring and total-colouring chordless graphs
A graph G is chordless if no cycle in G has a chord. In the present work we investigate the chromatic index and total chromatic number of chordless graphs. We describe a known decomposition result for chordless graphs and use it to establish that every chordless graph of maximum degree ∆ ≥ 3 has chromatic index ∆ and total chromatic number ∆+1. The proofs are algorithmic in the sense that we ac...
متن کاملEquitable neighbour-sum-distinguishing edge and total colourings
With any (not necessarily proper) edge k-colouring γ : E(G) −→ {1, . . . , k} of a graph G, one can associate a vertex colouring σγ given by σγ(v) = ∑ e∋v γ(e). A neighbour-sumdistinguishing edge k-colouring is an edge colouring whose associated vertex colouring is proper. The neighbour-sum-distinguishing index of a graph G is then the smallest k for which G admits a neighbour-sum-distinguishin...
متن کاملBETTI NUMBERS OF CHORDAL GRAPHS AND f-VECTORS OF SIMPLICIAL COMPLEXES
Let G be a chordal graph and I(G) its edge ideal. Let β(I(G)) = (β0, β1, . . . , βp) denote the Betti sequence of I(G), where βi stands for the ith total Betti number of I(G) and where p is the projective dimension of I(G). It will be shown that there exists a simplicial complex ∆ of dimension p whose f -vector f(∆) = (f0, f1, . . . , fp) coincides with β(I(G)).
